Topkapi Palace was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and served as the primary residence and administrative seat of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries, from 1465 until 1856 when the sultans moved to the European-style Dolmabahce Palace. Perched on Seraglio Point where the Bosphorus meets the Golden Horn, the palace complex occupies roughly 700,000 square metres and was home to as many as 4,000 people at its peak, including the sultan, his family, government officials, and the palace guard. The complex is organised around four successive courtyards, each more exclusive than the last. The First Courtyard was open to the public and housed the imperial mint and a church converted to the palace bakery. The Second Courtyard contained the Divan (Imperial Council chamber) and the entrance to the Harem — a labyrinth of over 300 rooms decorated with some of the finest Iznik tilework in existence, including the chambers of the Valide Sultan (queen mother) and the sultan's private apartments. The Third Courtyard held the Audience Chamber and the Palace School where future administrators were trained. The Fourth Courtyard, with its terraced gardens and pavilions overlooking the Bosphorus, was the sultan's most private retreat. The Imperial Treasury houses staggering wealth: the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond (one of the largest in the world), the jewel-encrusted Topkapi Dagger, and thrones of gold and ivory. In a separate section, the Sacred Trusts collection — rarely found outside the Islamic world's holiest cities — includes relics attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, including his cloak, sword and a tooth, as well as the staff of Moses and the turban of Joseph. The palace became a museum in 1924 under Ataturk's reforms. Visiting tip: the Harem requires a separate ticket and is the single most rewarding section — buy it at the entrance rather than queuing inside.
